Two of the most crucial things are to apply to a personnummer (Swedish personal identity number) and, subsequently, an ID Kort. Both of them need an appointment at a Skatteverket service office, and the simplest method to get one is to book online.
This guide will take you through the process bit by bit so that you are aware of what to expect.
Why You Need a Personnummer and ID Kort
- Personnummer: This is your Swedish personal identity number. Almost everything in Sweden requires it, opening a bank account, registering in health care, getting a mobile phone plan, joining the library, and even store membership cards.
- ID Kort: After getting a personnummer you may order an official Swedish ID Kort. This card serves as an identity document and is also needed in BankID, the digital identity system in use in Sweden in banking, government services and online purchases.
In short: You normally apply to a personnummer, and then to the ID Kort upon receiving it.
Go to the Online Booking System
In order to make an appointment, open the official booking page: Skatteverket Online Booking
You can select two kinds of appointments on this site:
- Identity Check (Flytta till Sverige / Moving to Sweden and coordination number) – for personnummer or coordination number applications.
- ID Kort – for applying for a Swedish ID after you already have your personnummer.

Booking for Personnummer or Coordination Number
In case you are new in Sweden and have to register:
- In the Select Make an appointment, select Identity Check (Flytta till Sverige).
- Tick the box that states that you have read the information regarding data processing.
- Choose the categories.
- Check the requirements and the documents to carry (passport, residence permit, admission letter in case you are a student, marriage/birth certificates in case you need them). Then tick the box to agree to this.
- Select date, time and location of the service office.
- Enter your own information and make the reservation.
Important tips:
- You are allowed to give a notice of your relocation a maximum of 14 days before reaching Sweden.
- After arriving in Sweden, you must visit your appointment within 14 days of sending the notification.
- The processing time is usually 2-4 weeks and your personnummer (or coordination number, in the case of stays less than one year) will be forwarded to your Swedish address.
Booking for an ID Kort
Once you have been issued with your personnummer, you may apply to be issued with a Swedish ID Kort.
- On the same booking page, select ID Kort.
- Mark the box that states that you have read the information about personal data processing.
- Click on the number of people and select Person 1 ID Kort as the category.
- Read the terms of application and the acknowledgment box (you have to pay the fee before you are appointed).
- Select a date, time and place.
- Enter your information and make the reservation.
What to bring:
- Valid passport
- Proof of payment (the fee is currently 400 SEK)
When you are appointed, the staff of Skatteverket will take your photo, fingerprints, and measure your height. It takes approximately 2-4 weeks to process and you will be informed through SMS or email that your ID Kort is ready to be collected.

Key Reminders
- It is always advisable to make your appointment online prior to visiting Skatteverket. Walk-ins are not usually possible.
- Carry all necessary original documents (passport, residence permit, university admission letter, marriage/birth certificates of family).
